About this tracker

CA Home Insurance Tracker is a free, data-only reference for California homeowners. It publishes only facts we can tie to a public source, and every row links to that source.

Methodology

  • Insurer status (writing / restricted / paused) comes from statements by the California Department of Insurance (CDI), the insurers themselves, or established news outlets. Each row shows the date of the most recent source we rely on. If no source states an insurer's current new-business status, we mark it unverified rather than guess. Older statuses (e.g., from CDI's September 2023 market summary) are shown with their original date so you can judge how current they are.
  • ZIP moratoriums come straight from CDI bulletins issued under Insurance Code §675.1 (SB 824). An automated script downloads each bulletin PDF and extracts the fire names, ZIP codes, and emergency declaration dates. Each protection period is one year from the declaration date, and status (active/expired) is recalculated on every update.
  • FAIR Plan counts are quarter-end policies in force as published by the California FAIR Plan. Its site blocks automated access, so quarterly totals are read from a public tracker that republishes them (cited), and we cross-check them against CDI releases and press reports. When sources differ, we say so and do not average or adjust.
  • Commitments are taken from CDI announcements of Sustainable Insurance Strategy filings and approvals. "Delivering?" reflects only published evidence. If there isn't any, we say "no public data yet."
  • Changelog entries are dated by the source's event date and link to it.
  • We never invent or estimate numbers. Anything we couldn't verify is left out or labeled unverified.

Update process

A daily routine re-checks CDI's bulletin index and wildfire non-renewal page, CDI press releases and consumer alerts, and FAIR Plan statistics. New moratorium bulletins and FAIR Plan quarters are added automatically after validation. Possible insurer status changes are flagged for a person to review against the source before the site changes. If a source can't be reached, the existing data is kept unchanged.
